Last night before I went to bed, I was looking at some old photos from when I was a kid. My favorite photo is a picture I have of myself with a big grin on my face, mischief in my eyes, and a helmet that's too big for my tiny little head. It was the last thing I looked at before I closed my eyes. As I was falling asleep, I was in that stage when you're not quite asleep, but not fully awake. I had this vision of myself as a child come to me, bike helmet and all. My little self said to my present self "Don't disappoint me." And it was one of the most beautiful messages I had ever been sent.
When we are children, our little minds are so pure and good. We haven't been molded or influenced in any way. We are so free, we are so innocent, and we dreamt bigger than ever.
I looked at my little self and smiled. I didn't say anything because she already knew what my smile meant. It was a promise that I will always have love in my heart like I did when I was her. I will never stop dreaming my dreams no matter how big or unachievable they seem. I will still scrape my knees, lose my shoes, forget to brush my hair, pick all the marshmallows out of the Lucky Charms, make friends with the underdog, fall asleep in the grass, break the rules, count the stars at night, and be fearless.
If yourself as a child were to meet you now all grown up, what would they say? Make our little selves proud to be who we've become today, because we as children are a beautiful inspiration of what life should be. As I closed my eyes little me whispered "I want to be just like you." I looked back at her and said... "And I want to be just like you."
